Part III – Gabriella

I had developed a nice friendship with the Pizzeria owner and one late Saturday evening, after closing time, he invited me to sit down with him while he added up the earnings of the night. It had been a good evening considering that it was raining heavily outside.

“Don’t worry about walking home tonight. I’ll accompany you when it lightens up outside. Go grab a couple of glasses of scotch, will you? My wife and kids are over at her parents tonight and I have some time to spare. By the way, I’m not keeping you from studying tomorrow morning, am I?”

I shook my head. That was another thing I meant to talk to him about. I was too far behind in my studies and had decided that it was time to move on. I was going back home and would be staying for another month or two in Siena. He was sorry to see me leave when I told him this. Our discussion inevitably turned to the time we first met as we started to reminisce. He sighed and looked at me with a heavy, uncomfortable air.

“I have something to confess. Remember when I told you that I didn’t know where you would be staying?”

I nodded. The circumstance of our first meeting was permanently etched in my head. His friendship was the only good thing that had come out of this story.

“It wasn’t true. I lied.”

My face must have clearly shown my stupor as he gulped down his scotch. It was a period in time, even if very recent, that I had tried the best to remove from my mind and to be suddenly brought back to that past knowing that there were details that could only add to that terrifying experience left me suddenly very unsettled. I had never revealed the true nature of my sudden departure to anyone. The closest I had ever come to admitting something was when I had shown up that Sunday morning at the Pizzeria and asked him if he could rent me a room for a week or two until I found myself a new place. When he asked me why, I told him that I felt uncomfortable in the apartment and we had both left it at that.

Now I was about to realize that his lack of curiosity had purposefully concealed a path in his mind that he too did not wish to navigate. That he dared tread upon it a few steps to reveal a detail or two was a testimony to our friendship at the time. It was as if he knew that something had happened to me in that room and wanted to reassure me that I had not gone crazy. In a certain way it did reassure me, but in another way it was the start of a story which was about to haunt me for the rest of my days. For without his contribution, I would not have felt compelled to write down this story.
